Major William Gooch was NOT the uncle of the governor. It is just coincidence that the governor's uncle William also died in 1655, but that man was interred in the parish of Mettingham, Suffolk, 1 Jan 1655. Mettingham Parish Register 1653-1787: "William Gooch gentille man the sonn of WilliamEsq was buried the first day of January 1655 [presumably 1655/6]." He was the brother of Thomas Gooch, Alderman, who was the governor's father.
So unless somebody carted the major around for 3 months before burying him in England, yet still put up a tombstone to him in York Co, VA, this is a different William.
The major did not die without heirs, either. His heir(ess) was his daughter Anne, who married 1) Capt. Thomas Beale (1649-1679) and 2) William Colston (ca. 1645-1701).
