Vasold Family Name

The Vasold family name and its spelling variations -- Fasold, Fasolt and Vasolt -- can be traced back into German antiquity.

Vasolt, the brother of Ecke in the "Song of Ecke" [The Eckenlied] is part of the Dietrich legend.

It has been documented in scholarly texts, that Dietrich von Bern was based on Theoderic the Great, who ruled northern Italy and that general area to the north from 493-511 CE.

It has also been documented that Clovis, King of the Franks from 481-511 CE, pushed some of the Germanic tribes into the area controlled by Theoderic as the Franks moved south and east, so there were opportunities for interaction -- and hence, a basis for the legends.

More recently [circa 1850], "Fasolt" appears as Fafner's brother in The Rhinegold opera, part of Richard Wagner's Nibelung Ring series -- where Wagner borrowed heavily from German legend, mixing and matching the names as needed for the story line.

If you would like to discuss the origins of the Vasold name or perhaps more about these German legends, please contact me at pvasold at defnet dot com -- entered as an email address, such as "someone@someplace.com" -- or respond to this forum message.

I'm looking for anyone who may have additional information about the Vasold name in German antiquity.

Paul Vasold
