Additional information about Hiram's second marrriage to widowed Matilda BAKER, nee COX, and about children Fred and Cora:

Fred was actually Matilda's son by her first husband, Joseph BAKER. He is identified in Matilda's will as son Frederick Stanley BAKER. Cora was also identified in Matilda's will as adopted daughter Cora RENNOCK [sic]. Supporting documents stated that she was not legally adopted.

Civil Death Registration #1903-016440: "Matilda VARTY died 4th July 1903 at lot 6 of concession 2 in Sheffield Township, age 77 years, 3 months and 6 days. Farmer's wife. Widowed. Born Ireland. Cause of death organic heart disease. Physician J.C. BURROWS. English Church. Informant Fred S. BAKER."

Will #1231 Lennox & Addington County Surrogate Court Records (MS887 #14-1041): "Matilda VARTY of Sheffield Township, widow" who died 4th July 1903 appointed son Frederick Stanley BAKER as executor. She mentions son Joseph BAKER, son Frederick Stanley BAKER, adopted daughter Cora RENNOCK [sic], Luella BAKER and Fred BAKER. Value of personal property was $350. The supporting documents showed that Cora was not legally adopted.

Hiram's second wife was buried in Christ Church Anglican Cemetery with her first husband, Joseph F. BAKER, who died in 1876. Her part of the tombstone reads "Matilda COX, wife of Jos. F. BAKER, died July 4, 1903, age 77 years, 3 mos." This date matches the death date on both her will and her death registration where her name is given as "Matilda VARTY".

When adopted daughter "Cora Jane VARTY" was married, she listed her parents as "Hiram VARTY & Matilda COX". Her 1898 marriage to John Wesley PENNICK [sic], appears in Ontario Vitals Statistics marriage #1898-006780.
