Palatka Daily News, Friday, Sept. 15, 2006 – 7A (Palatka, Putnam County, Florida) Earnest Varnes Earnest Varnes, 57, of San Mateo, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 12, 2006, at Shands Hospital, Gainesville. Earnest was born in Hastings. He was a graduate of Walter E. Harris High School, class of 1967, and was a self-employed farmer. He was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church and the Hastings Quarterback Club. He loved his church, his family, his friends and his farm. He was preceded in death by his father, Willie “Jug” Varnes; sister, Marie Varnes; brothers, George and Willie S. Varnes Jr.; nephews, Lorenzo and Claudean Varnes Jr.; niece, Johnnette Peeples; mother-in-law, Rosa Lee Cooper; sister-in-law, Leria S. Peeples; and uncles, James and Claude Varnes. A devoted wife survives him, Gloria Holder Varnes of San Mateo; daughters, Toria Varnes of Federal Point and Quarterria Varnes of Tampa; one granddaughter (two weeks old); a devoted mother, Jereline Varnes; godmother, Jereline Raven Battle of Fort Lauderdale; brothers, Claudean Varnes, Willie J. Varnes, John H. Peeples, Robert (Hazel) Wesley and Thomas (Pat) Burrell; sister, Brenda Sue (Donald) Baskin; aunt, Annie Ruth Green; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and sorrowing friends. Calling hours will be held from 5-8 p.m. Friday (today), at Coleman’s Mortuary of Hastings. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Hastings, with the Rev.
