Posted by: M.A. Allen (ID *****1452) Date: September 09, 2004 at 09:34:56
In Reply to: James, Nellie, Marvin... Varnes FL, GA 1930 census by susan of 206

According to Marvin Varnes SS-5 his parents are James Edward Varnes and Mellie Thomlinson.

1920 census, FL, Polk Co, Medulla, ED #159, Household
86/86, our Varnes family is boarding with a Fred R. and M.E. Lewis
and children. What's there for us:

Varnes, James B (the B is clear on the census image, but must be an
error due to it being James Edward) is boarder, MW 50y/o M, yes/yes,
GA, GA,GA laborer/farmer

Mellie Varnes (notice Mellie, not Nellie) is boarding, FW25y/o M,
yes/yes, GA, GA, GA.

Marvin Varnes is son, MW4S FL, GA, GA
Goldie is daughter, FW4/12S FL, GA, GA

I believe I have found our Mellie Tomlinson and her family:

1910 Colombia Co., FL- E.D. 48 #168:

Tomlinson, Floyd H(ead) W(hite) 27 FL
,Matilla, W(ife), 26, GA
,Peurly, D(aughter),6,FL
,Hattie, D, 3, FL
,Wilbur, S, NR*, FL (*in age column-possibly "NB" for "newborn")
,Mellie, SI(ster), 18, FL

I looked for our Mellie in the 1900 index as well:

Jennings, Hamilton Co., FL Pct. 1, Vol 6, E.D. 39

Tomlinson, John J., white, March 1849, 51, Georgia
,Georgia, wife, June 1849, 50, GA
,Floyd, S, March 1883, 17, GA
,Emmer, D, Apr 1884, 16, GA
,Ethel, D, Aug 1885, 15, GA
,Seth, S, Apr 1887, 13, FL
,Goaly, D, Aug 1889, 10, FL *
,Melley, D, Sept 1891, 8, FL

*This is the entry that -for me- clinches identity. Mellie's daughter was listed as "Goldie" in the 1920 and 1930 census records, but she always spelled her name "Goley" and that's the name she was called by.

I have found Mellie's parents in the 1880 census:

John TOMLINSEN Self M Male W 30 GA Farmer GA GA
Georgia TOMLINSEN Wife M Female W 29 GA Keeps House GA GA
Nancy TOMLINSEN Dau S Female W 11 GA GA GA
Florence TOMLINSEN Dau S Female W 7 FL GA GA
William TOMLINSEN Son S Male W 3 FL GA GA

Source Information:
Census Place Statenville, Echols, Georgia

Also found them in the (taken- 29 Jul)1870 census, Homerville, Clinch Co., GA household 620, lines 24 and 25:

Tomlinson, John, 21 M, W, Farm Hand, GA
,Georgia, 20, F, W, Keeping House, GA

As for the Varnes link I have found this:

Colombia Co., FL- 1910 E.D. 45 #98:

Varnes, James E. H(ead) W(hite) 43 GA
,Genie, W(ife), 23, FL
,N.R, D, 3, FL
,Mavani, S, 18, FL

Suspiciously the ages between this James E. Varnes and Mellie Tomlinson are quite similar to the 1920 census.

Any further information on this family is greatly appreciated!

M.A. Allen
