My parents always said the origins of the name were dutch and that our original name was Warntz. Ours is from U.P. of Michigan and I recall hearing My great grandfather moved there from Detroit (I think) where he worked as a cop. He was George S. Varnes and went by Stewart (1867-1964) and his wife was Clara (1868-1954). His son was Lloyd S. Varnes (1896-1948)and his wife was Marguerite (Stephens)(1893-1962). Their son was John Lyle Varnes and his wife (my mother) Thelma Mary Schultz. I'm the oldest of 5 boys with the surname and we're scattered about in California, Wyoming and Colorado. Nice to see information on the name.
