As I understand it, the first Van Zandt to move down to North Carolina was named Garrett Van Zandt (presumably named after--I believe--his grandfather of the same name.
From what I've been able to gather, this Garrett had three sons--Garrett, Jacob and James. I know for sure that the younger Garrett ended up in Kentucky--documents in the National Archives attest to that. Just as definitive evidence places Jacob in Franklin County, TN. The one I'm not sure about is James.
It may very well be the case that my great-great-grandfather, Isaiah Isaac Van Zandt, was the son of this James and it may be that James made the move west with his brother into TN and would therefore be these other Van Zandts you refer to. The occurance of the name James in my family at this time would support this theory; e.g., James Simpson Van Zandt, James David Van Zandt (James Simpson's son).
I must admit I'm a poor student of the family's history. I do find it remarkable, however, that the oral account of the family's movements over two centuries passed down to me are supported by documentary evidence. Namely, that we started out in what is now New York, moved to Pennsylvania, then down to the Carolinas, then into Franklin County, TN, and from there to the Arkansas/Missouri area.
