From what I know, John VanTrojen jumped ship and settled near Chimacum, Washington in the 1870s. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were listed in the 1880 Washington Territorial Census. They are also included in the 1900 Federal census--along with their children. There is also some mention of him and one of his sons in the book, "Washington West of the Cascades." In the late 1960s, a Van Trojen was the mayor of Sultan, Washington.

I had a photograph of what I believe to be John VanTrojen and his wife taken around 1900, but gave it to one of his great-grandsons a couple of years ago.
