Thanks Carol for all the research on James and Eliza Jane.

Eliza Jane Knowlton, his wife, was the daughter of Abijah
Knowlton and Abigail Ann Russell. Abijah grew up in Bedford
Westchester Co., NY, and went to NYC to engage in business.
We assume all his children were born there.

Eliza J. was his fifth child. I knew she married James
Vantine [most of this is from Charles Stocking's HISTORY
OF THE KNOWLTONS . . . (1897)] but little else. I suspect
the birthday you have is correct but not the year as her
younger sister Abigail was born in April of 1815.

She is living with her brother Stephen Knowlton in 1850 in
Brooklyn, as you note. Since she died in Bergen Co., NJ, I
imagine she was living with her sister Abigail Lane's
family at time of death. I need to look for her in 1860.

Thank you for all the dates and the city directory entries.
Eliza's older brother Isaac H. Knowlton was also a cartman
and a grocer. NEW YORK CARTMEN by Hodges has many details
about cartmen plus sources to check as they had to get
licenses to work. I just noticed on the web that Isaac and
James left on the same ship, the Rollo, from Boston, Jan 17,
1849, for San Francisco. Isaac had recently lost his wife.
Isaac returned home to New Jersey; but his son George W.
Knowlton made a permanent home in California, and many of
his descendants are still there.

I have entered many of these people onto Rootsweb's
WORLDCONNECT and will continue to update in the future.
Thanks again for all the information about the Vantines.
