Dan Sickles, Civil War General
FYI, folks: a new book will be out in April 2002 entitled, American Scoundrel: the life of the notorious Civil War General Dan Sickles by Thomas Keneally.Doubleday, 320 p., $27.50.
He is probably the most colorful of the relatives that I know of.He was a general; military governor of South Carolina;
American minister to the court of Spain; a US representative from NY; and had the distinction of killing Francis Scott Key's son in a duel at Lafayette Square (in front of the White House).He loved women, gambling and drinking; his own father disinherited him because of his wild ways.
I look forward to seeing this latest biography.
