Van Sickle, Van Sycklen, Etc. NJ, NY, TX
Posted by: Dolores Date: August 14, 2001 at 16:13:44
  of 1585

I have just recently begun to try to verify my Vansickle/VanSycklin/VanSicklen/etc.....ancestors. I have a ton of info, but can't verify much of it. It is research that a deceased uncle did years ago before the wonderful Internet, forums, etc. I don't know what his sources were. I'm sure he got much of it from family members. There are some of my Vansickles living in Hunt County, TX in a little community called Vansickle. (appropriate huh?) Some of my uncle's info probably came from interviews with them. I was given copies of his notes by a cousin, who got it from her mother, who got it from...... I am enclosing what I have. If anyone can add, correct, or otherwise help me, I would appreciate it.

My paternal ggrandmother was Mary Ausite Vansickle Rogers b. 1858 d. 1932
Mary Ausite's father was Rueben Vansickle b. 1821 Arkansas Territory d.1874 m. Elizabeth Griffin b.1830 in Louisiana d. 1905 in Rusk Co., TX and they had 5 children.

Absalom King Vansickle was Rueben's brother. He lived in Rusk County, TX. When Reuben and three of his children (names and dates unknown) died of yellow fever in Louisiana, Elizabeth and her two remaining children came to live with Uncle King (Absalom King Vansickle) in Rusk County. Elizabeth is buried beside her daughter Mary Ausite and her son Henry in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Rusk County, TX. (NOTE: I have a photograph of Absalom King Van Sickle. He looks like Santa Claus.)

Rueben's siblings were
Benjamin Anderson Vansickle b. 1817 d. 1904 m. Orlenia Earp in 1838
Hiram C(ornelius) Vansickle b. 1818 d. 1847 m. Martha Ray
Elias S. Vansickle b. 1819 d. 1880 m. Mary Cook b. 1842
Absalom King Vansickle b. 1823 d. 1910 m. Martha Wadsworth b. 1828 d. 1900

Benjamin Anderson and Orlenia had Grisilda, Leah, Thomas, Mary, Martha.

Hiram C.(ornelius) and Martha Children? Unknown. He signed the charter which formed the first county government of Rusk County, TX in 1840.

Elias m. Mary Cook and had Anderson King, Leah, Mary, Sarah, Orlena, others?

Reuben m. Elizabeth Griffin in Plaquemine, Iberville Parish, Louisiana. They had Mary Ausite, b. 1858, Henry, b. 1886, and three others, names unknown. He was superintendent on a sugar plantation in Louisiana. His wife, Elizabeth, was half French. (Broussard) Reuben died in Ascension Parish, LA from yellow fever.

Absalom King and Martha Wadsworth m. 1854 and had Wigfall, Wiley, (died as a child) Mary, Fulton (worked for the Texas Pacific Railroad) and Leah b. 1872 d. 1951. Absalom and Martha are buried in the Bethel Cemetery, Rusk County, TX.

Anderson King (son of Elias) married Sarah Smith and they had Benjamin E(phraim) b. 1872 d. 1937 m. Edna Maloney, had Willie A. b. 1870 d. 1948; Hershall Virgil b. 1874 d. 1898 m. Ester Turner. When Anderson King was only 27 years old he was killed when a tree fell on him. He and two of his sons are buried in the Wasson Cemetery, Rusk County, TX.

Father of Benjamin, Hiram, Elias, Reuben, and Absalom, was Ephriam Van Sickle, a native of New Jersey, married Mary Elena Leah. They first moved to the Arkansas Territory about 1807. From there they came to the Spanish Province of Texas around 1817, settling near what is now Nacogdoches, Texas. Ephraim acquired numerous tracts of land which lie in the present day counties of VanZandt, Hunt, Rusk, and Nacogdoches.

Other names that appear in my uncle's notes are:

Johannes , Nay Ephriam b. in NJ d. 1857, Fernandus b. 1635 Holland d. 1712 Gravesend NY, Reinier b. 1673 NY, Cornelius b. 1690 NY, Andrew , Neeltje, Gerrit, & Jan. Eva Antonis Janses, Jannetje VanHooren, Maria, Debbie Quick, Mary Elena Leah, Jan Terhune, Jan Bondet, Grietji, Jan Banta, Margrita Van Lenven.

I have become very frustrated as I have searched the forums, the Census, Ancestry.com, Rootsweb, the Mormon Church site and lots of other places and found so many discrepancies. I realize it is difficult to keep them all straight, when they all named their children after their fathers, uncles, gfathers, brothers, etc. etc. But I have found all the names above in various pedigree charts and forum postings with different dates, married to different people, having different children, and even some married to a sibling or a parent. I am appalled at how people have submitted their genealogies obviously without proper verification . I am new at this, as I am sure is obvious. I have only been working for about a year. I am unable to travel much except to local libraries. Would appreciate any help.
