Hi Sabrina,

It wasn't until I saw the post left the Allegany Co. MD board at RootsWeb back in the year 2000, that I was certain your ancestor, Joanna, is the daughter of Jacob and Sarah of the above-mentioned county. The post, from a descendant of Joanna, lists your ancestor's full name as Johanna Fernandes VANSICKLE. I believe your ancestor to be the "Fernandez SICKLE" living with Jacob and Sarah in Allegany County in 1850 [even though she was listed as a male in the census]. Please note that if using the indexes at, she is listed as "Fanandy SICKLE".

Here is a link to the post to which I refer:

This area of Fayette Co. PA/Allegany Co. MD/Garrett Co. MD/Preston Co. WV has proved to be difficult to research when it comes to tracing the VAN SICKLE name. I haven't done as much research as I would like on those from this area. I do believe though that Jacob VAN SICKLE was the son of Zachariah VAN SICKLE and Susan MARKLEY.

Several online sources lists Jacob's death as 1856. His widow, Sarah, then became the wife of John BURK (or BURKE). She can be found in the 1860 and 1870 census in Allegany Co. MD, and in the 1880 and 1900 census in Garrett Co. MD. I do not yet know her maiden name.

I have been a VAN SICKLE researcher for a very long time, and I am interested in all branches of the family. If you have any info. that you'd like to share with me, I'd greatly appreciate it. Likewise, if there is anything I can do to help with your research, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Good luck with your research!
