Joan, Hi! Which 1880 census did Pat find Rissa at? I have not found her, nor Benjamin, on any of them that I have looked at.
Pat told me about where the name Chewning came from and she sent me a family history also. Fascinating!
Doing some research on Ouachita County, I discovered that Ouachita County was formed in 1842 from Union County. Also, discoverd that between 1846 and 1858, the courthouse burnt. A new one was built and it burnt in 1875. Then in 1931, the courthouse was heavily damaged by a tornado. That may explain why we are having so much trouble finding any information on Benjamin and/or Rissa. I have also check the census for Union County and have not come up with anything as of yet.
I have sent Pat a couple or so e-mails. Ask her to forward them to you, if she hasn't already done so. They may contain so information of interest to you.
When I find out anything, I will let you and Pat know.
