Dear Wayne,

[Deep] Behind the ongoing and acrimonious exchanges between Mr. Gusman, Doug Van Curen and myself--from the Van Curen and McCool side--is a determined effort to demonstrate proper genealogical research. What to do and, especially, what not to do. It is true that Van & I have become somewhat too invested in getting Mr. Gusman to see the light, but that really secondary at this point to helping others to avoid the mistakes Mr. Gusman repeats. Van Curen, for instance, provides excellent recaps of availible records and how to use them.

Meanwhile, on the Van Sickle = Sickles (various spellings), there is nothing in the records to indicate any connection between these two distinct families. If you use the "Search this Forum" function on the main page here and put in the word Zacharias, it will take you to a brief thread that touches upon this topic.

Also, if you go to

you can pick up more discussion. I especially recommend Message # 295, dated 22 December 2000, for an overview of the available early records on Zacharias Sickels, the progenitor of that family. These records were gathered by Lorine McGinnis-Schulze, proprietor of The Olive Tree web site and first-class genealogist.

and also Laurie Lightfoot, another excellent genealogist who specializes in the descendants of Ferdinandus^1 Van Sichelaer.

Hoping to be of some assistance,
