It is Dutch in Origin; Capt. Cornelis Aertsen VanSchaick was the first known to settle in New Amsterdam, New Netherlands (NYC); VanSchayck is an older variation of the name; [*interesting point- the original family name was Eggbertz; earliest ancestor was named Herman Eggbertz 1300's, the next generation was Eggbert Hermanz (possible indication of running afouls of the authorities), 3rd generation was again Herman 1400's?; who married a lady with the last name VanSchayck; we recieved the name Matrilinally; which could be because this lady was the "unmarriable daughter or just the only child of a man who wanted the family name to pass down" and thus finding a man willing to take on his wife's name in lieu of his own. Perhaps the incentive was money and/or respectability that went with the agreement.) Aaron VanScoy was the first known VanSchaick to change his name to VanScoy; from there, there have been several variations of the name show in various branches in my research. I hope this helps you out.... The VanSchaick/VanScoy's migrated north/south and then westward; my own line settled in Iowa; and there has been family members with Military service from before the Revolutionary war; another interesting item is Taddy Roosevelt's Ancestor "Cornelis VanSchaick Roosevelt" whose mother was the daughter of Cornelis Aertsen VanSchaick.
