I have two SHEAFOR / SHAFOR / SHAFER family connections to the Van SCOYKE family in Butler Co., OH, in the early 19th century that I'm having difficulty finding further information about.
Mary SHEAFOR was either the wife or widow of an unknown Van SCOYKE in 1826 when she was named in her father Peter's will: "I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Vanschoyke, the sum of two dollars in full of her part or share in my real and personal estate." --Will Book 1, p.363, Butler Co., OH.
Peter's grandson, Hayden W. SHAFER (son of Peter Jr.), md. Rebecca Van SCOYKE (parents unknown), Dec. 20, 1838, Butler Co., OH. In 1840, H. W. SHAFOR was enumerated in Lemon Twp., Butler Co., p.148. In 1850, Hayden W. SHAFER 35, wife Rebecca 34, Mary C. 7, William 5, and Henrietta 3, were enumerated in Miltonville, Butler Co., where Hayden was running a hotel. He reportedly moved to Clark Co., MO, in 1859, but he's not indexed in the 1860 MO census. By 1870, H. W. SHEAFOR was in Louisa Co., IA, where he and Rebecca both died in 1874. His gravestone has his name as Haden W. SHEAFOR. They reportedly had 7 children: Mary Catherine, William B., Henrietta, Sarah E., Clark Daniel, and 2 unknown.
My SHEAFOR family moved from Somerset Co., NJ, to Mercer Co. and Fayette Co., KY, in the late 1700s, then to Lemon Twp., Butler Co., OH, in the early 1800s.
