Hi, I have Catherine (Van Riper) Caldwell as the daughter of Thomas Van Riper and Mary Jane Smith.I don't have anything more on Mary Jane, but Thomas VR was the son of Richard (aka Derick) Van Riper and Eva Mandeville.Thomas was b. in New Jersey; the baptismal records of the Second River Dutch Reform Church records Thomas VR's birth as April 23, 1798, his baptism as May 20, 1798, "son of Derick Van Riper and Eva Mandeville".Richard and Eva Van Riper left New Jersey, and settled for a time in Danby, Tompkins Co., NY.Their son Thomas appeared in his own household in the 1825 census for Danby, Tompkins Co., NY.Of course in those early census records, only the head of household (Thomas VR) was listed, but there was a female in the right age range to have been Thomas' wife Mary Jane. There were no children, but the census DOES indicate there had been both the birth and the death of a female child in the year preceeding the census.Thomas and Mary Jane Van Riper and family at some point moved to Tioga Co., NY (as did Thomas' father Richard Van Riper) and can be found in the 1850 census for the town of Tioga, Tioga Co., NY.Their children at the time consisted of a son George Van Riper, age 21 (I have a bit more on George's line), a daughter Sarah Van Riper (age 18)--she went on to marry George Kelly, and resided in Clinton Co., PA; a daughter "Alfa", age 15 and labeled "idiot" on the census, a daughter Ellen, age 10, and daughter Catherine, age 6.By the time of the 1860 census, Thomas Van Riper and family had moved to Leidy township, Clinton Co., PA.The household consisted of Thomas VR (age given as 68, which is a little old if his birth year of 1798 is a correct transcription of the Second River Dutch Reform church record), wife "Maria" (listed as Mary on other census records), a 23 year old female, looks like Alhe or Athe Van Riper, (Alpha on the 1850 Tioga, NY census)--again listed as "idiotic" as in that 1850 Tioga, NY record, a 19 year old male named Eli Van Riper who never appeared in the 1850 record--wondering if it was really the daughter Ellen Van Riper, who would have been abt. 19 in 1860? and daughter Catherine Van Riper, whose age was given as 16.I do have Catherine as the 2nd wife of James Caldwell, his first wife having been Catherine's older sister, Elizabeth Van Riper.(Elizabeth did not appear with her birth family in the 1850 census for Tioga, NY, so she may have already been married to James Caldwell--Elizabeth b. 1827.)I hope this helps you.I do have a bit more on Thomas Van Riper's siblings, or at least those I know of.
