They settled in Wiltwych (presently-Ulster County,NYAs I don't know how old your are you will have to figurewhere your lineage lies.Van was 6th generation as well as allVan's brothers and one sister. Nathan Van Meter, is my great, great, grandfather and Nancy & Joseph are my Great, great great Grandparents and my great, great, great, great grandfather is "Capt" Jacob Van Meter sometimes known as "Miller Jake" because he built a mill on"Billy Creek" in Hardin County, Kentucky. My father was 10th generation and I'm in the 11th generation.Don't know where you live but we are kin to each other. In the 1870 KY. census there were 761 VanMeter's living in Hardin County, which ic Elizabethtown, KY. as well as other counties. Majority are buried Gilead Cemetry in Hardin County, some on their own farms, some are buried at Glendale,KY, right in the same area, some are buried in the Elizabethtown City Cemetery. some are buried at St. James Cemetry, still in Hardin County. Hope this info is helpful. Any other questions just email:[email protected]. I was just down to the cemetries in October,2007 doing some more research. All above info is factual and from the Hardin County Records. Much more is available and I'm in the process of joining the DAR. Have 2 cousins already members. We've all done a lot of work to bring the records up to date and it's been 10 years in the doing. We're also members of the Kentucky Historical Society and have provided them with much info. Jacob VanMeter, along with Sam Haycraft, were some of the instrumental men responsible for the settling of Elizabethtown,KY.Both are buried, side by side, with DAR plaques as tombstones. The begining of the VanMeter lineage can be traced to September, 1253, Village of Meteren in the province of Tiesterband, Netherlands. There were several Knights, several Lords, Justices, and a wealty family. They didn't come to America because they were poor, they came to add more land to their already vast holdings in the Netherlands and land they did procure. If I can help anymore, just email me. I also have one picture of one of their palatial homes in the Netherlands.
