I believe I have found your grandfather in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, and the WWI draft registration. However, since I can't seem to find him in the 1900 census (and that would be presumably when he was living with his aunt, since he would still be a minor at that time), and the only relative outside of his wife and children living with him in the 1910-1930 census was a Hampson brother in law, I can't take the next step back.

The good news is that the draft registration gives his exact date of birth: April 7, 1885. That might be enough for you to send to Trenton and have a search done for his birth record.
