Sandra,
Sounds like you are in Water Valley/Coffeeville area.John Van Hoozer and Elizabeth C. Powell Van Hoozer were my grgrgrandparents and directly in front of their graves were my maternal grgrgrandparents, Daniel Webster McCormack and Sarah Amanda Jones McCormack (Now spelled McCormick).
John was Valentine's older brother, born in 1811, md. 19Dec1833 in Lincoln Co., TNValentine was born in 1813 in Lincoln Co. TN and md. Margaret M. Treywick in Yalobusha Co., MS 12 Sep 1850.They evidently stayed in MS for 2-4 years after marriage as the 1860 Marion County Alabama census, sheet 668, family#366/374 lists Volentine VAN HOOSIER age 30 Male born in TN and Margaret age 29, Female born Alabama with children, APPLETON L. age 7 Male born MS; Margaret A., age 5 female, born MS; Alta Maria, age 7/12 Female, born AL; and Martha J. age 2, Female, born AL.Difference in spelling occurs throughout our history. The obituary for my grandfather in Yalobusha Co., mS spells it VAN HOOOZIER (John Steward).
If you are in Water Valley area, you can go to the Blackmuir(??) Library. I have about 80 pages of tracing the Van Hoozer lineage from Jan Fransse Van Husum down to my family and provided them a copy. Also LDS Library has itJOyce Lindstrom,467 North 3200 East, Lewisville, Idaho 83431 published a over-750 page book in 1993, entitled Van Hoose, Van Hooser Van Huss Family in the United States and it includes many of the other spellings.
Your father's middle name may be Felts or Felty as it is closely tied to every Valentine in our history.
Thomas Hart Benton Van Hoozer was the son of John and Elizabeth VH.He had 4 daughters & 3 sons and he and his wife are bried in VH Cemetery.Other VHs buried there are his sisters, Tabitha Ellen VH Anthony & her husband D.G.; Rose Berry VH Farr5ell & hus. O.P.;Agnes VH Farrell & hus. William C.; Martha A. (Mattie) Gillon & hus. John J.
My great grandfather, ROBERT STEVEN VH was married 5 times and had 12 children. He is buried in the VAN HOOZER plot at Oak Hill Cemetery in downtown Water Valley with 3 of his children and one wife all listed on the single tombstone. It is just a few yards inside the gate on the right side 3-4 rows bacl from the road.
I am not at home now but will be rteurning there this Thursday.I am in Oklahoma and live in Texas. My e-mail is [email protected] have some info I can e-mail to you, including a listing for the cemetery. Please feel free to contact me.I plan to go to the McCormick Family Reunion at Sardis Lake on July 1st so may get to drop by YB County again.
By the way, Chris Morgan compiled a terrific book YALOBUSHA BOUND which covers the Yalobusha County 1850 census, then takes it beyond that where he could find information on families.Unfortunately, it is out of print and I have lost mine.I am trying to locate a replacement copy as I used it for research for many of the different families from there.
