The "James Henry VanHook" you mention - would that be the husband of Zerelda Ashcraft? I've have a bit of information on this line, but have never connected it to Abner Lewis VanHook. You can see what I have at:

All the census and burial records show James Henry VanHook as being born in 1838 in Indiana. Abner and his family never left Kentucky. If he was born in 1838, Abner and his wife Freelove would have been in their 60's by then. Also, a "James Henry" never appears in Abner's list of children in his Bible (as recorded in a couple of places), nor is there a "James Henry" named in Abner's will.
I don't think James Henry is Abner's son (unless you have other proof), but I don't know who's son he was!
