If you select images on a well known search engine, type in 'vane coat of arms' you will come up with the coat of arms for Raby Castle, just outside Durham; from your description, there may well be a similarity. The catle has been the seat of the Vane family for some centuries.
I have to say, it is all new to me.
If however, anyone knows anything of the Vane family in Kent, and the move to there from northern England and anything about the move from there in the early 20th Century to Sussex and the railways, I would be most interested, since my grand father moved for exactly that reason.
