More on early Vanderford-Vandeveer's

[Though I am not directly discussing any of the Vanderford's who became known as Vandeveer, the transition in the next generation to variants of Vandeveer has been proven so this applies to members of that family.]

Reviewing what data there is:

Thomas (the Younger) Vanderford was reasonably born between 1715-1720. In 1739 he married Jane Emory who was named administrator of his estate with brother George Vanderford posting a 50 pounds bond. Orphans Court records indicate that he and Jane had three children: George, Mary and Eleanor. This is the extent of the information available concerning Thomas (the Younger).

He has been assigned as the son of Thomas (the Elder) Vanderford (who we now know was born in 1699 vice 1689) who married Rosanna Ashbury. This Thomas died in Kent Co., DE in 1767 and had the following additional children: Charles, John, George (twin b. 1740), Ashbury (twin b. 1740) and Sarah (b. 1737).

The obvious error in assigning Thomas (the Younger) as the son of Thomas (the Elder) is in the "brother George Vanderford" who posted the 50 pounds bond. George, son of Thomas (the Elder) was only 7 years old when Thomas (the Younger) died.

Reviewing the entire family structure up to 1747, there are only two George Vanderford's living and of age that year:

George (II) Vanderford (son of Joris/George Paulus Vanderford)
b. btwn 1688-1694, d. 1758, Kent Co., DE; and his son:

George Vanderford (Jr.), b.c. 1717-1724

George (II) was 53-60 years old when Thomas (the Younger) died, but his brother Thomas was Thomas the Elder who died 20 years later.

George Vanderford (Jr.) was between 23-30 years old when Thomas the Younger died and is the only other George in the family over 16 in 1747.

Keeping this in mind, Thomas the Younger's known children were: George, Mary and Eleanor. If naming traditions applied at all, then George could have been named for Thomas' father and Eleanor for Thomas' mother. Your guess is as good as mine as to where Mary came from.

George (II) was married to Eleanor Hollingsworth. He did not die until 1758, around 11 years after Thomas the Younger. In his Will, he only named living children and did not name any grandchildren. Because he left only 1 shilling to George Jr., it can be reasonably be assumed that George Jr. had already received his portion of his father's estate and the shilling was to ensure that he did not have a claim against the remaining estate left to his brothers.

In similar fashion, it is just as likely that if Thomas the Younger was his son, his children were not mentioned because Thomas had also received his portion of his father's estate while he was still alive or his children did upon the death of their father in 1747. No mention of Thomas or his children in the Will of George (II) does not exclude him from being George (II)'s son.

Pulling this all together, it is apparent to me that Thomas Vanderford who married Jane Emory was the son (likely the eldest) of George (II) Vanderford.

Another thing this then leads us to pursue are potential additional records concerning George Jr. who was apparently residing closer to Thomas in Queen Anne's Co., MD vice Kent Co., DE, since the bond did not specify that the brother George resided anywhere else (as was the norm at the time).
