Obit: The Wilson County News, Floresville, TX 13 Apr 2004 Howard L. Vandeventer, 79, of Port Orchard died Jan. 11, 2000, at his home. He was born June 21, 1920, in Perry, Iowa, to John and Golda (Martens) Vandeventer. He grew up in Wilmington, Calif., graduating from Banning High School there in 1937. Mr. Vandeventer served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945, stationed in San Diego. He married Ruth Bodily Oct. 14, 1944, in San Diego. Mr. Vandeventer worked as a longshoreman in California and in Seattle, retiring in 1985 after 35 years. He had been a foreman with Sealand in Seattle for 18 years. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Survivors include his wife; one son, David of Massachusetts; one daughter, Kris Ann Riddle of Port Orchard; one sister, Leila Rhoads of Portis, Kan.; three grandchildren, Marna, Zachary and Sara Riddle, all of Port Orchard; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. A funeral service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the Bremerton Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Mullinex Road in Port Orchard. Interment will take place at Sunset Hill Memorial Park in Bellevue at 2 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Vandeventer, 81, of Port Orchard died Saturday at her home. She was born in Pendergast, Ariz., to Charles and Bertha (Stewart) Bodily. She graduated from high school in Indianapolis. On Oct. 14, 1944, she married Howard Vandeventer in San Diego. He preceded her in death in 2000. Mrs. Vandeventer served in the Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945, achieving the rank of storekeeper third class. She owned and operated beauty shops in Issaquah for 38 years until her retirement in 1985. Mrs. Vandeventer was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Port Orchard. She enjoyed quilting, crochet, reading and spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include a son, David Vandeventer of Virginia; a daughter, Kris Riddle and her husband, Ralph, of Port Orchard; two brothers, Curtis Bodily of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and E.W. Bodily of Winnemucca, Nev.; two sisters, Thelma Stephenson of Danville, Ind., and Maurine Pugmire of San Diego; three grandchildren, Marna Palmer and her husband, Jon, and Zach Riddle and his wife, Sara, all of Port Orchard; and two great-grandchildren, Jakob and Leonardo Palmer, both of Port Orchard. Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Rill Chapel's Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1550 Hoover Ave. SE in Port Orchard. Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Park in Bellevue.
