Need help finding Vanderlinden family in NY, NJ & Philly
I'm researching my family's Vanderlindens in NY, NJ and Pennsylvania.I have found records for some of them but then they just disappear.I would appreciate info you may uncover or have uncovered.
Here's what I know:
Johan Vanderlinden b. Holland 1868 married in 1905 to
Josephine Vanderlinden b. Antwerp, Belgium 1874
Emigrated to America in 1905 and resided in Kingston, NY
They both became Naturalized in NY 1912
Johan's occupation: Carpenter
Around 1918 the family lived somewhere in NJ, I base this on the birth of their daughter Anna as on the 1930 census in indicates she was born there.
Their Children were:
Elizabeth b. 1906 in Kingston, NY
Joseph b. 1908 in Kingston, NY
Harry b. 1910 Kingston, NY
Anna b. abt 1918/9 somewhere in NJ
Elizabeth became pregnant at age 15 and gave birth to a Son, Francis at age 16, born out of wedlock, with a man named Francisco Gonzales(age unknown). Francis has, in part, his Father's first name, his mother's surname and in part his maternal grandmother's first name as his middle name at birth:
Francis 'Frank' Joseph Vanderlinden b. Sept. 8th 1921 in Philadelphia, PA.
At age 17 Elizabeth marries Anthony Grome in Philadelphia, PA.
Anthony Grome appears as Anthony Grone in the 1930 Philadelphia, PA federal Census. This is one of only two documents where I find a record of him. On it is an indication that he was born in 1902, emigrated to America from England in 1915 and as of 1930 was still listed as an Alien despite his marriage to Elizabeth in 1923. The only other document with Anthony's name on it is Francis' SS application in April of 1938 where he is listed as a step-father and by this time, Francis has taken 'Grome' as his last name.
In 1930 Johan, Josephine, Harry and Anna reside at 770 So. 5th St. in Philadelphia, PA according to the federal census along with their son Harry and daughter Anna. Their last name here is incorrectly spelled Falendalenden.
In October 21, 1939 there is a record which shows Johan and Josephine returning from a trip abroad leaving South Hampton, England aboard the SS President Harding at a NY port.
In 1930 Elizabeth, Anthony and Francis reside a few blocks away at 607 So. 9th St. in Philadelphia, PA according to the federal census. This census indicates his birth father's birthplace as Spain. There are many errors on this record so it's unclear if that is true. For example the last name is spelled 'Grone' and Francis is listed as 'Frances' and labeled as a daughter.Elizabeth's parents have incorrect birthplaces as well; for her dad it reads Belgium where it should read Holland, for her mom it reads Ireland where it should read Belgium. Also family stories indicated Anthony came from Italy, this census indicates 'England' as his and his parents' birthplace.
As for Francis' biological father; I found four Francisco Gonzales' in Philadelphia between 1920-1930, however just one is from Spain and he is an older married man in his 50's in 1920 and spells his name as Frank Gunsalles. As for the other three, one is Philipino and there is a passport photo too, it's clear he is not the father, another is Mexican, and he seems to be the strongest candidate as he is just 10 years older than Elizabeth at the time of the pregnancy(age 25 to her 15; awkward, but not unheard of), lives in the area on So. 3rd St. according to his WW1 draft card in 1918 and apparently remained in the area through 1942 when he fills out his WW2 draft card just two miles away on Federal St. in south Philly. The last one is born in PA, but his father is Cuban and his mother is born in PA. as well. Interestingly, in 1930 he resides as a lodger at 415 So. 9th Street, just one and a half blocks away from 9 year old Francis at 607 So. 9th St. Coincidence? Maybe?
On Francis' SS application in 1938 he lists his family's address as 770 So. 5th St. in Philadelphia, PA
The final record I find for this family is a SS death index record for Harry Vanderlinden in Mt. Holly, NJ in April of 1987.
So please, if anyone has any better or additional information on this family please leave me a reply. And of course, I hope this information is helpful to you all as well, even if only to eliminate some unknowns which you may have in your research.
