H. A. VanderCook, 1864-1949

Hale A. VanderCook was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was
performing in bands by the age of 14, and became conductor
of the J.H. LaPearl Circus Band in 1891. He settled in Chicago
and founded VanderCook Cornet School in 1909. The purpose
of the school was to train musicians as performers, directors
and teachers.

VanderCook composed over 70 marches. Among the most
famous are American Stride, Olevine, Pacific Fleet, Pageant of
Columbia and S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. He published his
Course in Band and Orchestra Directing in 1916.

VanderCook studied cornet with Frank Holton and A.F. Weldon.
He published Modern Method of Cornet Playing in 20 Lessons in
1922.

NOTED MUSICIAN, SCHOOL FOUNDER DIES IN ALLEGAN

ALLEGAN - Hale A. VANDERCOOK, of Route 1, Allegan, nationally
known musician, died Sunday morning in his home, The Maples,
following an illness of several months. He was 85 years old.

He was founder of the Vander Cook School of Music in Chicago and
was a composer of band music.

He was born Sept. 3, 1864 in Ann Arbor, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Vander Cook and came to Allegan at the age of 4, living here
until going to Chicago. Following his retirement 7 years ago, he
returned here.

Surviving is the wife, Emily.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Nyberg
Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Graveside services
will be in charge of the Masonic Lodge of Allegan.
