The Vanderburgh family emigrated from Holland about 1700 and settled in Herkimer County, NY. Richard was born here in 1796. In the war with England in 1815, he was a soldier at Sackets Harbor and later came to Alexandria where he worked for Mr. Le Ray, a large landowner. He married Eunice Southworth whose ancestors were on the Mayflower. At the age of 41 Richard died leaving his wife and four small children.

In 1838 Eunice married Joseph Hind of Yorkshire England. They lived on a farm in Plessis. (The old Vanderburgh farm was located about one half miles from the village of Plessis on the road to Redwood, NY) They had four children. Eunice died at the age of 50 and Mr. Hind then married Janet Shields. They had one son, Norman, who married Florence Tahash. They had one son, Thorton. He lived in Dover, Delaware.

John Southworth Vanderburgh married Lucretia Suits. The went to South Dakota and took up land near Huron, South Dakota where John died in 1901 and Lucretia in 1908. They must have had some children for about 1905 or 1906 Preston Vanderburg and wife visited us. (Mary Wilson)

Esther Vanderburg married Elnathan Plato. They had one son, James, who was adopted. They lived on a farm on top of a hill going into Plessis.

Angline Vanderburg married Ephraim Wemple, and they went to Huron, South Dakota where they took up land. They had at least two daughters, for one married a Claxton, and had a son Richard who took care of his grandparents. Another daughter, Ada, was a school teacher. Besides her school work, she took up a homestead and worked so hard that her mind became effected and had to be put into a state hospital where she eventually died.
