We live in William Vanderbilt's house in Greenville, NY, circa 1889. As far as we know, and according to local legend, William Vanderbilt, middle initial may be S., was the black sheep of the Vanderbilts and he was pushed up the Hudson until he landed in Greenville.

While not being a direct descendant of the Commodore, our William Vanderbilt had enough money to build or buy this house and his brother or cousin, the relationship is not clear, George V. Vanderbilt was able to donate the land for our town park.

We know the great granddaughter of William Vanderbilt who recalls going to the scions of William H.'s when she was small and playing on their estates and NYC properties. She tentatively confirmed the local history about Willliam Vanderbilt of Greenville being a "party man".

So, we would like to know any and everything about William Vanderbilt of Greenville and whether he is William S. Vanderbilt, the man who built the opera house.

Thank you.
