I would like to add my "two cents" to the discussion on the meaning of Vandegrift.
In my Dutch-English dictionary, the meaning of van is "of, from, with, by, for".The meaning of de is "the".There is no der in this dictionary, so, Vandegrift seems to be the right spelling even tho it has progressed to being one word.
My ancestor spelled it differently. Some may have spelled it differently to distinguish themselves from the others, or, more likely, the spelling came from tax lists, deeds, marriage records, censuses, etc.
