Geri,
I am also looking for Vandecar in NY. I have a relative named Henry living in Lockport, NY. in 1850, DOB 1823. His brother, Ira DOB 1818 living in Half Moon, NY. Census list name as Vandekar, but will list it as Vandecar.
The Waterford census of 1850 list a William age 37,(boatman), spouse Louisa,24. Children: Harriet E., 9, Hester J. 3, & Georgeianna , 2. I think that is about the age your William might have been.
My relatives were also boatmen.
Just a FYI to let you know.
