John Van Cleave,

Checking the Vancleave fam gen forum, I did not seem to find much posted about my own Van Cleave lines, so I posted a little information about them first. Then I posted some stories, mainly about the attack on Bryant's Station, from the writings of Errett Van Cleave & his son, James Wm Van Cleave, who were more closely related to you & your lines. I was planning to post more about your Aaron & Elizabeth (Van Cleave) Van Cleave lines, when I found, and posted a follow-up to, the follow-up post by Pat Loftin, concerning the Samuel Van Cleave (of Ben & Ruth Munson) line. Now, on to Aaron & Elizabeth's lines, but first, I must relate and experience I had about 25 years ago.

Sometime during the years of 1977 & 1978, my wife and I moved to Crawfordsville, Montgomery Co, IN, with our oldest five children. For the short amount of time we were there, I tried to find as much about my Van Cleave-Chase & related lines as possible. Much of that time, it was too cold to be outside visiting cemeteries, so most of my research was in the local library, and in the Montgomery Co, IN courthouse.

During one of my visits to the courthouse, I found a reference to the will of an Aaron Van Cleave in one of the indexes, and I informed one of the clerks that I wanted to see that folder (in Box 14). I was told that they would have to go down into the basement and bring it up, and that it would be about an hour. As you can imagine, I had plenty of other names of the Van Cleave family members to look for in the indexes. When they brought me the very old & dusty probate folder, with the name Aaron VanCleave on it, I can still remember how excited I was to see it. It was, by far, the thickest will or probate folder I had seen, up to that time.

I was really hoping, naturally, that it was the will of my 3rd grt grandfather, Aaron Van Cleave (d 1846), widower of Elizabeth (Griffin) Van Cleave (d 1834), instead of the will of my 5th grt Uncle Aaron Van Cleave (d 1844), widower of Elizabeth (Van Cleave) Van Cleave (d 1833-5?), your direct ancestors.

It took me awhile to dust off the old pages, and to try to unfold them without causing any harm to them. After I began to read some of the names of heirs, it eventually became apparent to me that the wills of both Aaron's were mixed together in this one folder. I decided to just read what I could, in what little time I had left that day, and to ask them to hold this folder at their desk until the next day (I seem to recall that they had to return it to the vault in the basement). After a series of 2-3 hr periods, in morning or afternoons, I finally felt confident that I had the two wills properly seperated.

Finally, after I had seperated & wrapped something around each will, I took them up to one of the clerks and explained to her that this one folder contained two wills of two different Aaron Van Cleave's. I hope they were properly seperated into two folders, and indexed by seperate #s a & b, as I suggested for them to be, but, at first, they were not convinced that I knew what I was talking about. I'm not sure I was ever able to convince them.
