VANCE & GLASS FAMILIES: OPEQUON, VA
If you are interested in the Opequon settlement in Frederick County, Virginia, this book is recommended: H. Tyle Blethen and
Curtis W. Wood, Jr., Editors, Ulster and North America, Transatlantic Perspectives on the Scotch-Irish, University of
Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa, 1997. The chapter to read is Warren R. Hoftra's chapter entitled "Land, Ethnicity, and
Community at the Opequon Settlement, Virginia, 1730-1800," pages 166-188. This is excellent background on the community,
plus descriptions of James Vance's death after an amputation, his will, and other matters. Samuel Glass is referred to as the
community patriarch.
If you know of other scholarly material on Glass, Vance, Gilkeson, and Pancake families, please post a notice. Thanks.
