In 1770 James Moore was appointed guardian of the minor children of Ezekial Vance (Senior) b. 1745 Lancaster PA, and Elinor Curry, parents of of William Vance b. 1764 d. 1804 and Ezekial Vance Jr b. 1768. James Moore was the father of Sarah Moore, who married this William Vance b. 1764 d. 1804. 1800 Census Menallen, Fayette Co. PA- Eziekel Vance was living alone, next door to his brother, William Vance with his wife Sarah and 3 children, James, Jane, and William Jr. 1800-1804 Ezekiel married widow Sarah Burnet, also of Menallen Township, Fayette County, PA Sarah in 1800 is listed with 3 children all under 10 years old. 17 January 1804 Ezekiel Vance is listed as Executor for his brother, William Vance's will in Menallen, Fayette Co. PA. 1810 Census Ezekiel Vance living in Menallen, Fayette Co. PA, a couple of months later he is also listed in: 1810 Census Ezekiel listed living in Chesterfield Co. VA with household numbers: 10001 11501-0,14. Ezekiel Vance married a wealthy widow, Sarah Burnett, in Menallen, Fayette Co. She had 3 children with Mores Burnett, Edward Burnet b. 1792, m. Susannah Baird, Mahitable Burnett b. 1795 m. Elijah Thompson, and John Burnett b. 1800 m. Sarah Henderson (her father was William Henderson buried in the God’s Knob Cemetery. Ezekiel was involved in multiple court battles in PA, concerning his wife's deceased 1st husband's wealth, Moores Burnett b. 1760. About Mores Burnett, b. 1760 Mores had purchased land in Menallen Township, Fayette Co. PA in 1794. The indenture of 1810-1820, a copy of which follows, names the heirs of Moores Burnett who were living at the time of the settlement of his estate in Pennsylvania. The Indenture was made in Guernsey County, Ohio, and was signed there by the heirs on August 1, 1819; it was recorded at Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1820 at the request of the eldest son, Edward Burnett and his wife, Susannah, both of whom made a personal appearance in the court there for this purpose. The names of the heirs, as declared in the Indenture were: 1. Ezekiel Vance and Sarah, his wife, formerly Sarah Burnett and widow of Moores Burnett; 2. Edward Burnett and Susannah, his wife, (military papers from the War of 1812 declare that the first wife of Edward Burnett was Susannah Baird, whom he married in Fayette County, Pennsylvania on December 20, 1814). 3. Elijah Thompson and Mahitable, his wife, formerly Mahitable Burnett, one of the children and heirs of Moores Burnett; 4. John Burnett (John Burnett married Sarah Henderson, daughter of William and Nancy Ann Clendenning Henderson, on March 1, 1821 in Guernsey County, Ohio, record on file at Cambridge. This William Henderson is buried at God’s Knob Cemetery in Guernsey Co. Ohio) 1810-1813 Ezekiel Vance migrated to Guernsey Co. Ohio 1810-1827 Ezekiel Vance is listed in Will Abstracts page 12, Belmont County, Ohio, Vols. A, B, and C August 1813 Ezekiel Vance is listed as an early settler of Oxford township and was on a jury August 1813 at the first session held in the county courthouse. Stories of Guernsey Co., Ohio by William Wolfe, page 931: "One of the first to settle on Pultney Ridge was Ezekial Vance who came from Fayette County, Pennsylvania and purchased the Southeast quarter of Section 10 and the Southwest quarter of Section 4. This land is now known as the Grier farm and a member of the family possesses the original deeds showing the purchase from the Stubenville land office where the sales of land in the Seven Ranges were made. The roman numerials at the top of this map, is called the range, choose the number VII, in blue, and go down to township #9 (Please note #9 is inside Guernsey Co. with the Belmont on it's east boarder, also the blue color, shows this area is in the 1st Congressional Survey. James Vance (heirs ) had 160 acres in Sec 16 (Cyrus's father) Nancy Vance had 40 acres in sec 22 These Vance's owned sections 22, 26, 10, and 4 all next to one another. Each section represents 1 mile long, so they owned land on Pultney Ridge Road, the last 4 miles in Guernsey Co. till it hit the Belmont Co. line. (The Nancy above, still don't know how's she's connected Williams wife was sarah, and James wife was Abigail James and Abigail were the parents of Cyrus Vance) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sarah Vance sold to William Vance in 1816 Dower, Volume C, page 109 (Guernsey Co. Deeds) This Sarah, was the Widow of William Vance b. 1785 d. 1804, William was brother to Ezekiel Vance. (She was also daughter of the James Moore who took guardianship of Ezekiel Vance and William Vance, from their mother Elinor Curry Vance). This William Vance b. 1785 had recieved this land, prior to his death in 1804. These lands were in the First Congressional, and were put on sale in 1803. Possible, Sarah’s father, who did serve in the Revolution, had received lands from her father, but in Williams name appx 1800-1803, or it was a cash sale in 1803, William Vance died 1 year later in 1804. Many of the earliest settlers in this area, were bringing in supplies, trying to clear lands, build homes, and later bringing in their families. These Vance’s, were clearing mass amounts of acres, clearing the land for a Drover Station on Pultney Ridge Road. This area, there were alot of Indians, wolves and panthers. This William was Cyrus's Grandfather. This land later, inherited by Ezekiel Grier, he was the grandson of William Vance d. 1804, son of Jane Vance. That William d. 1804 was brother of Ezekiel Vance). This land was purchased at the Steubenville land office, where sales of land in 1803, in the Seven Ranges were made, the deed was signed by President James Madison serving presidency from March 4, 1809 – March 4, 1817, this deed would be from Sarah Vance to Ezekiel Vance, but not the earlier deed to William Vance prior to his death in 1804. Steubenville land office would be the holders of the deed to this land dated 1800-1804. This land, went from William Vance, placed in a Dower for his Widow, Sarah, then in 1816 Sarah sold the land to Ezekiel Vance. Ezekiel built a tavern on Pultney Ridge Road(1825 Tax record) and built a two story home brick home, and cleared land on Pultney Ridge Road, to accommodate the livestock to feed and rest, before heading on to the east markets, this was called a “Drover Station”. This was the main road the Drovers to move the livestock to the eastern markets. Ezekiel's old Tavern on Pultney Ridge Road is gone, but the cellar and foundation stones are still there to mark it's location. The home was still standing in the 1960’s, it is unknown if it still is. ------------------------------------------------------------- COPIED FROM AN OLD CHURCH RECORD "The Central Christian Church at Quaker City, Guernsey County, Ohio was organized in 1817 at the Knob Meeting House two miles north of Quaker City and was known as the Hopewell Christian Church. William Henderson was one of the charter members, he was buried at God's Knob Cemetery. Jesse Jarvis and John Burnett were among the early preachers. In 1860 the congregation moved to town and afterwards was known as Millwood Christian Church." ------------------------------------------------------------ 1 Aug 1819 Ezekiel Vance sold his land in Menallen for $600, deed signed in Guernsey Co. Oh Ezekiel Vance was living next door to his brother’s (William d. 1804) son, William Vance Jr. 1825 Tax list in Guernsey Co. Oh Ezekiel Vance is listed. 1830 Census Ezekiel Vance living in Oxford Twp. Guernsey Co. Oh 1833 James Vance died (father to Cyrus) James married Abigail Milson on Oct 1 1804 in Brownsville, Washington Co. PA.(From Brownsville, could take a flatbottom boat down the Monongahela and Ohio. James served in the War of 1812 as a private, under Capt Thomas Shannon, 1812 pension file lists him in Guernsey Co, while in the military, he had served at Fort Meigs with brother William. His estate was to be divided into 10ths. 1837 William Vance b. 1811 sold to Enoch Galloway in 1837, 160 acres of land in Sec 16 of Twp 9 in range 7, previously owned by James Vance (d. 1833) and Abigail Milson, parents of Cyrus Vance. This William Vance was brother to Cyrus. 1840 Census Guernsey Co. Ohio (note: both Cyrus’s mother Abigail, two brothers John and Thomas, and great uncle Ezekiel Vance moved from Pultney Ridge Road to Millwood Twp. Aka Leatherwood and Leatherwood Valley. Abigail Vance - Millwood Twp 332 (Cyrus’s mother) John Vance – Millwood Twp 332 (Cyrus’s brother b. 1812) Thomas Vance - Millwood Twp 332 (Cyrus’s brother b. 1818) Ezekiel Vance - Millwood Twp 334 (Cyrus’s great Uncle b. ) 1844 Ezekiel Vance died Ezekiel Vance's property on Pultney Ridge Road, was handed to Ezekiel Grier, his neice's son. Property than called The Grier Farm. 1847 - William and wife Vance sold to Thomas Vance, 16 acres of land in sec 16 of Twp 9 in range 7. This is on Pultney Ridge Road. 1850 Census Guernsey Co.
