VANCEs born mid 1800s in IN and IL

I have a John VANCE who had children: Samuel, Absolum and Matilda all born somewhere in Indiana in the 1840s in 1842 he married Elizabeth VANCE and had Levi, James, Christina, and Philip born in IL. Shortly after Philip was born both John and Elizabeth disappear but their youngest children turn up with grandparents. I'd very much like to know where this John VANCE came from and where he and Elizabeth ended up.
