Hi Brooke,
I can't help directly - yet, but I may be able to in the long run. A few questions:
I take it you've searched available online Australian records, haven't you - so there's no point in my looking there? But still, whereabouts in Aus?
Do you have any idea where James came from? Ireland, Scotland? England? I've had a brief look around the Scottish records without any luck - but it would help if I knew whether there's any point in bothering!
Do I understand correctly that John m Jane Emmerson before emigrating?
And, do you have any living male Vances from that line?
