I wish I'd been able to read your message earlier. I made an unplanned stop at the county library's genealogy section this evening. Since it was unplanned, I didn't have my lap-top or even note-paper, but I scanned through some of their volumes on PA, VA & WV in a haphazard way. Some of the names you mention are in the group I've been tracking (e.g. William Patterson, Hugh Lyle, John Park, John Snodgrass, &, of course, Hugh Vance). One, in particular, I recall seeing: Lodowick Fry (which is probably a mangled version of Ludwig Frei, and he or his people are probably from northern Germany where they use the hard K pronunciation; in northern Italy, for instance, it comes out as Ludovici, pronounced more or less as Lew dough weee chee). There were several John Vance entries in the tax list book. I don't recall which ones mentioned Patrick Vance. I'll have to make the trek back with computer in tow (and maybe the scanner; there's this one nice map...). The most frustrating thing was that so much of what was there were merely indices to other volumes not present, and there are shelves filled with local genealogical society news-letters from around the USA, but finding anything in them is a chore. Of course, it would be a lot easier if I were in south-eastern PA or Berkeley (Berkley) county WV with their local collections. Notify Administrator about this message?
