Vicki, Your Polly Vance Gonce was the daughter of Adam Vance who died in Cumberland Township of what was then York County, PA and is now Adams County. His will was dated Dec. 1777.His administrators were John Vance and Benjamin Armstrong.William Gilliland who owned adjoining land was named as guardian for his daughter Sophia. She later married John Agnew. The remaining children were William, Mary Hutchinson (deceased) who had a daughter Mary Vance Hutchinson whose guardian was Alexander Cobean. The remaining daughter was Margaret, wife of Abraham Gonse. It is known that this couple later went to Hawkins County, TN.
It has been surmised that this Adam Vance is the one along with John and Joseph Vance who were in New Castle, DE prior to Adam's removal to PA.This would certainly tie in to the Gonce location and might explain why Rudolph Gonce had a daughter named Mary Vance. There are so many instances of cousins marrying in those times.
Adam Vance was a very rich man for his time.I located an old gentleman who has done a great deal of research on him and calls him the "mystery man of the Manor of Mask."I visited his home just north of Gettysburg recently and received copies of the extensive inventory of Adam's estate.I am trying to make a connection from this Adam to my gggggrandfather JamesAlexander Vance who named his oldest son Adam.I know that he had connections in the area where Adam lived and the names of the PA neighbors tally with the names of my ancestor's neighbors after he relocated to SC.
Letters is the estate file indicate that John Vance and Benjamin Armstrong were brothers-in-law to Adam and that Moores and Clarks also had a connection to the family.
Eventually the land where the house stands went to the son William and surrounding shares went to the other heirs.
If you are interested in joining the Vance Family Association, I can give you information that would enable you to have access to the newsletters which are full of good information. This Delaware connection of the Gonce [also found in the documents as Gonse and Gantz] family will be helpful to my research. Thanks, Jan
