Z. or S. Vanauken Fur Trader in Jackson Co., OR 1815
An older friend of mine tells of camping with her family when she was ten or so.This was in Jackson County, Oregon. She was making a house and was gathering moss to use as a rug. There was a big moss-covered rock in the area. She pulled a big piece off and there was writing carved in the rock.It read:Z. or S. Vanauken 1815.From her understanding, he was a Dutch Fur trader. At some point an article was written about the "find".Her uncle who was with the adults claimed to be the one who found the rock, but it was actually my friend.
Does this story sound familiar to anyone?Any info or clues would be greatly appreciated. She has carried his name and the year with her in her purse for decades and would love to know more.
Thanks so very much.
