"Well Preserved Pioneer; Although 86 Years of Age, Reads Finest Print Without Glasses," was the headline in The Salt Lake Herald of Salt Lake City, Utah, 1 Sep 1905, p. 3, in a story "Special to The Herald" from Price, Utah.
The reporter jokingly asked Mr. VANATTA if he expected to sell his fruit farm at Helper "and go to the reservation."
Mr. VANATTA replied "that he would rather get a wife and settle down for the rest of his life." The article said he had been married three times "and survived all of his helpmates." It continued: "He came to the country in 1842," lived in Salt Lake City, moved around, and "some" 25 years ago, to what was Emery or Sanpete county, and has since resided near Helper, "having one of the most attractive places in this part of the state." In admiration, after Mr. VANATTA read some of the newspaper, the reporter wrote: "He has never had occasion to wear glasses and is very spry for one of his advanced years."
