I cannot say where I read about this, but it seems to me that during the American Revolution some of the VanEttens served in the Tioga Elmira and Big Flats area of New York. It was largely unsettled then and after the war was over several families, including some VanEttens moved to the area to settle. These folks named the town of VanEtten after themselves. On of my ancestors, a John VanEtten moved from New Jersey to the VanEtten area at a later date. He did not stay there the rest of life, but moved back to New Jersey,
