Dear Marti,

Unfortunately, I did not come up with a direct tie-in with your family. But I did find your mention of a Tabitha Vanarsdal to be very interesting. The same given names keep coming up in each generation and in every locale where branches of the family are found making it a real challenge to sort them out. But Tabitha is one not found often in the family. Nonetheless there is a Tabitha Vanarsdall (born 1780 died 1840) buried in the Old Mud Meeting House south of Harrodsburg. Though not the same person you mentioned, it may be a tie-in since, as I said, given names tend to be repeated. What additional research I have come across features the families of Cornelius B. and John Isaac, brothers of Jacob Van Arsdale, but not Jacob Van Arsdale himself. Nonetheless, I will give your what I have and will keep looking for more.

Cornelius O. Van Arsdale was the son of Okie (Ouke) Van Arsdale and Maria Van Cleve. Okie was the son of Christofell Van Arsdalen and Magdalena Reyniersen Van Hengelen. Christofell was the son of Jan Symonsz Van Arsdalen and Lammetje Probasco. Jan Symonsz was the son of Simon Jansen Van Arsdalen and his second wife, Pieterje Claesen Van Schouw, who are the common ancestors for our two branches of the family.

Cornelius O. Van Arsdal was the second of seven known children: brothers Okie (b. ca 1758), Isaac (b. ca 1762), Louwerens (b. ca 1764), Christofell (b. ca 1766), and sisters Jaunette (b. a 1768) and Maria (b. ca 1770).

Cornelius O. Van Arsdal married a distant cousin, Elizabeth Van Arsdalen, in New Jersey on 10 April 1791. To this union was born six children as follows:
1. Mary Harris Van Arsdale, born about 1792 in New Jersey.
2. Cornelius B. Van Arsdale, born ca 1794 in NJ. He married Polly Smock. Both died in Mercer County, KY.
3. Jacob Van Arsdale, born ca 1796. I have nothing else on him.
4. Abraham Van Arsdale, born ca 1798.
5. John Isaac Van Arsdale, born ca 1802 in Mercer County, Ky. He married Nancy Smock in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, KY on 14 Oct 1824, and died in Mercer County in 1890. John and Nancy had seven children.
6. Alexander Van Arsdale, born ca 1802.
It should be noted that some researchers include another, younger sister named Lucy; but I have no information on this.

Most of my information came through four sources: Clare Fulz (now deceased) who researched my branch of the Vannorsdal family in Ohio; Charles R. Vanorsdale of Midland, Tx, who supplied photocopies of original documents found in the archives in the Netherlands; Kyra Jo Hartke of Lafayette,IN, who has researched one of the Indiana branches; and Barbara L. Van Norsdall who provided more detailed information on Cornelius O. Van Arsdale gleaned from a military pension abstract for his service in the American Revolution. Kyra may have updated information that will be helpful to you. Her address was when I last had contact with her eight years ago. Barbara Van Norsdal is also worth contacting at Another source I have found helpful is the Harrodsburg Historical Society website at In addition to a wealth of searchable databases and the opportunity to purchase excellent resource books dealing specifically on Mercer County, the entire list of known burials at the Old Mud Meeting House is also on line.

I hope this is of some help.

Bob Mason
