Can anyone tell me anything about Abraham “Brom” Van Alstyne, who lived in Kinderhook, NY, in the early 1800s? He was an acquaintance of author Washington Irving, and legend has it that Van Alstyne may have been the inspiration for the character Brom Bones in Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Washington Irving likely met him in 1809 in Kinderhook; he was still alive in September 1855, as Irving briefly mentions seeing him in his journal: “Brom Van Alstyne, a helter skelter wag.” There appears to have been several Abraham Van Alstynes living in the Kinderhook area during this period; can anyone tell me “which” is the one Irving knew? Are any of his descendants aware of any old “family traditions” that tell how he was the inspiration for Brom Bones? Any additional information would be welcomed! Thank you!
