Hello Tracy,
I had previously taken notes on all the Valliere marriages I could find in the Loiselle Marriage index for Valliere as well as its supplement. If I didn't miss your couple when transcribing then I do not see a potential Joseph Gilbert married to any Marie Valliere in the index.(Loiselle does have some records for parts of US that FrCan settled in).I can send you the list of parishes the Loiselle covers for certain years if you'd like that. Thus you could pick parishes (in Maine for example) that are not in the index for 1883 to begin looking.
I guess my advice would be 1) do you find Marie or Joseph in the 1881 census - either US or Canada?(www.familysearch.org)That could give a potential place where they married 2 years later. There's alot of Marie Valliere's that show up so w/o an estimated birth year I have no idea if yours is in there.2) have you been able to find any records on Florence's siblings?B/M/D - you might get lucky and find that in one of those records someone put a county or town name in addition to Canada.3) do you have access to Ancestry.com either subscribed or via the public library? There is a Canadian Border crossings that I have found helpful (depending on the year - I don't know if yours came over in the right time frame for it to help) for some of my people for birthplaces because it usually lists more than "Canada" and they have to list a Canadian contact such that you could use that town as a start to look around for records (Ancestry.com has parish records for Quebec as well if you can read french).4) Was either Marie or Joseph born before 1851?If so you could use Ancestry.com and look at the 1851 census - there is an index - and see if you are lucky enough to find some potential Marie Valliere 's of the right age to check out.(1851 census did not survive for some areas).
Patty
