This property is located in Ashland Massachusetts....

I'm saddened that the town of Ashland has turned its back on the venerable Valentine Estate.

Thomas Valentine, whose ancestry can be traced to Alfred the Great, was one of the first settlers of Ashland. The early 1800s house and barn has served over the years as a private home, church and inn.

The Hopkinton railway once cut across the original property and its location on Ashland's first "highway," the old Native American Indian trail leading from the Massachusetts Bay to the Connecticut River, further adds to its historical significance.

The oversized development slated to take its place will dwarf the surrounding homes and require the removal of almost all the trees on the estate - some of them among the oldest in town.

How can this ill-conceived building project that robs Ashland of one of its oldest properties possibly make Ashland a more desirable place to live?

Towns all over Massachusetts have wisely created historic districts to celebrate their irreplaceable antique buildings. Ashland stands out as one of the few that has not.

Please stand up for Ashland's history by asking the selectmen to save our wonderful Valentine Estate. You can e-mail them at BoardofSelectmen@ashlandmass.com.

ELIZABETH WHITHAM, Ashland
