What I have is from Lydia Ann Vale Leffler's 1913 book, "The Genealogy of the Vale and Garretson Descendants."
"Robert Vale ancestor and progenitor of the Vales of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and many other states, was born in London in the year 1716, was a well educated man, below medium height, and became captain of a vessel sailing between England and America. He was admitted to membership in the Society of Friends at the Monthly Meeting at Sadsbury, England, 7th month, 17th day, the year 1744. For having become a member of this sect -- a disciple of Wm. Penn -- his father, Baron de Vale of Normandy, disinherited and disowned him."
Sounds like he was a Norman. There is a following description of Robert being a personal friend of William Penn and for Robert's voyages between England and Pennsylvania, Penn granted Vale 1000 acres in Warrington twp., York Co., Pa., known as "The Barrens." I don't think this story is accurate, the earliest land record I've found for Robert Vale in Warrington is dated 1752 for 50 acres.
On Robert's last voyage from England, he brought his future wife, Sarah Buller, who he married 1 mo. (Mar.) 14, 1749/50, at Warrington Friends Meeting, York Co., Pa.
