Vair vs Viar????

Since the last names are so similiar, I am wondering if someone could answer these questions. It seems as though Vair is mostly Scotland-based. What country or area would the Viar surname most likely be based? Would it be some part of Germany (present or past)? My grandmother had the name of a couple listed in her Bible. Their address was Mendolta, MO.

Until I found the man's name on the SSDI at LDS, I thought she had spelled it "Vair". Now it seems I must have misread her German/English writing mixture. In fact, I wasn't sure if it was "Vair" or "Voir". Now it seems to be "Viar".

Can anyone explain any of this to me? Thanks Sue
