Yes. The Y-chromosome is passed almost unchanged from father to son. The changes that do occur are a function of the number of generations that have elapsed. If I understand correctly, and if the tests are accurate, the variation between a test of a Veal(or Veale) and that of a Vail would tell us approximately how many generations have passed since the two people had a common father. There are also DNA tests of a different nature to follow the maternal line.
