I am only days into beginning my son's family tree but will let you know what I have been told by my in-laws regarding the indian heritage in the Sturgill Family. My father-in-law was Charles Ray Sturgill, son of John Sturgill and Myrtle _______? Family stories say he was the last in our line who was eligable for Indian benefits, which would make him 1/16 Indian. Suffice to say his father John Sturgill was 1/8, John's father 1/4 (unknown name at this time)and Johns grandfather 1/2. So for us it was John's great grandmother who was the full blooded Indian. I apologize for the lack of names, etc. I am very, very new in this endevour. And by the way, this clan believes that the indian tribe is the Cherokee. Please correct me if I am wrong, I hope you find the answers you seek.
Have a nice day,
P.S. I was also told that proving this or finding mention of it would be hard, I guess some people were very secretive about this aspect of our history.
