Janet,

Good to hear from you and I could not agree more that Dorothy Awbrey/Aubrey, the daughter of Richard Awbrey and granddaughter of Henry Awbrey, was not the wife of 1729/30 (year of death) John Wright of Stafford County, VA, (place of death). Instead, as you stated, she was the wife of John Billups.

Since the date of the posting to which you were replying, additional evidence has been found about Dorothy (Awbrey/Aubrey) Billups. Attached below is my write up on this issue:

Excerpt from The Identification Of 1792 John Wright of Fauquier County As Not The Son Of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County:

"The wife of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County was Dorothy (_____) Wright. On September 22, 1714, at Westmoreland County, Virginia, D.&W.B. 5/332 John Wright gifted 300 acres of land to his brother Richard Wright, son of John Wright’s father Francis Wright, and John Wright’s wife Dorothy relinquished her right of dower in the land:

“At a Court held for the sd. County the 29th day of Sept 1714 John Wright Gentl: personally acknowledged the above Instrument to be his proper act & deed to be & enure to the uses above in the same specified which Youell Watkins accepted in behalfe of Richard Wright and the sd. Watkins alsoe by a power from Dorothy wife of the said John (being duely proved) relinquished the right of dower & thirds of the said Dorothy at the comon law in and to the lands and prmisses above menconed.”

Hoppin went on to identify the wife of 1729/30 John Wright as Dorothy (Awbrey) Wright. He did this by a process of elimination and not by documented evidence:

"[page 366] One event was the second marriage of Francis2 to Martha Cox, and the other the marriage (about 1705) of John3 to a Dorothy, probably Dorothy Awbrey.*

*This marriage occurred about 1705. The exact date is not recorded as the records of marriage licenses, and bonds, and of the parish churches for Westmoreland are lost. Other records indicate the fact of the marriage. It has required exhaustive search and study to determine the identity of John3 Wright's wife Dorothy, because of the prevalence in the Northern Neck of Virginia of women named Dorothy. Seventeen Dorothys of marriageable age, circa 1705, appear in the records. The surnames of these Dorothys were Ransone, Gouldman, Armstrong, Henry, Ripley, Dudley, Gatewood, Smith, Baughan, Durham, Strother, Maclanan, Abbott, and Awbrey. No one of these Dorothys, save the last, extant records show, could be the Dorothy who married John3 Wright. The last one, Dorothy Awbrey, by a process of exclusion is decided to be the wife of John3 Wright.

Dorothy3 Awbrey was a granddaughter of Henry1 Awbrey (sometimes written Aubrey, Awbury, Aubery, and Awberry - Aubry and Aubrey being the spelling in Virginia of the name of another Aubry family that came direct from France). . . . Our particular interest is in the son, Richard2 Awbrey, as he was the father of Dorothy3 Awbrey who, it is believed, married about 1705 John3 Wright. . . ."

However, a deed from Essex County establishes that this identification of Dorothy Awbrey as the wife of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County and the daughter of Richard Awbrey and granddaughter of Henry Awbrey was incorrect. Essex County, Virginia, Deed 19/28 dated February 11, 1729, provided as follows:

"To all Christian people to whom this present Indenture shall come Know ye that John Billups & Dorithy my wife of the parish of St. Ann's in the County of Essex within the Colony of Virginia Daughter & heir Apparant of Richd. Aubery Decd Son of Henry Aubery Decd. do for diverse good Causes & Considerations me moving . . . . in wittness whereof we have hereunto set our hands & Seals this Eleventh Day of February in the year of our Lord One thousand Seven hundred & Twenty eight Nine

Signed Sealed & Delivered)       Jno. Billop
In the presence of us       )                     her
Joseph Lovill                     Dorithy        X       Billips
Edward White
Mark Morgan

At a Court held for Essex County on the 17th Day of June 1729 John Billups and Dorithy his wife Acknowledged this their Indented release of Land to James Garnett Gentl. which on his Motion is Admitted to record

                                          Test
                                          W Beverley C Cur"

This record clearly identifies Dorothy Awbrey, the daughter of Richard Awbrey and granddaughter of Henry Awbrey, as the wife of John Billups in 1729.

In addition, Colonial Families of the Northern Neck of Virginia by Ralph and Catherine Beverly stated the following:

“8. Dorothy Awbrey, b. 1685 in Westmoreland Co. VA, dau. of Richard (4) Awbrey and Dorothy North, m. John Billings/Billups.

In a bond dated 11 March 1713/14, L500 Sterl, John Billups and Dorothy his wife admin. of est. of Henry Awbrey deceased. Signed Jno Billups, James Baughan, John Boughan. Rec. 11 Mar. 1713/14. {Fleet, citing Vol II Essex Co. Wills and Deeds 1711-1714}

In a lease and release dated 21 Feb 1715/16, John Billups and Dorothy his wife of Essex sell Thomas Smith of Middlesex Co., 200 a. in So. Farn. Par., being part of a tract granted Mr. Henry Awberry, adj the main run of Hoskins Creek, etc. Signed Jno Billups and Dorothy Billups. {Fleet, citing Essex Co. DW 1714-1716 14:460}”

These documents indicate that Dorothy Awbrey was married to John Billups by March 11, 1713/14, and was still married to him on February 21, 1715/16. Colonial Families also listed Essex County Deed 19/28 previously referred to.

Since 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County was married to his wife Dorothy (_____) Wright on September 29, 1714, and Dorothy (Awbrey) Wright was married to John Billups before March 11, 1713/14, and was still married to him on February 21, 1715/16, Dorothy (_____) Wright, the wife of 1729/30 John Wright, could not have been Dorothy (Awbrey) Wright.

And if Dorothy Awbrey was not the wife of 1729/30 John Wright, then Francis Awbrey was not the great uncle of 1792 John Wright . . . ."

In addition, as you may already know, the Y-DNA sequencing of descendants of 1792 John Wright of Fauquier County, VA, does not match the descendants of 1713 Francis Wright of Westmoreland County, VA, thus confirming that 1792 John Wright of Fauquier County, VA, was not the son of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County, VA.

All of this is set forth in greater detail in my work The Identification Of 1792 John Wright of Fauquier County As Not The Son Of 1729/30 John Wright of Stafford County available from Heritage Books (heritagebooks.com).

Your posting stated that Dorothy Awbrey, the daughter of Thomas Awbrey, married John Wright in 1705 in Westmoreland County. That is very interesting information. Could you tell me what the source is that you relied on for that marriage record and identification?

I will be happy to exchange information with researchers interested in this Wright line.
