My family of Hawley/Halley lived on both sides of the River. Stafford Co., Va. grew out of Westmoreland. James Hawley was granted land in Westmoreland as early as 1666 in the area directly across from St. Mary's Co., Md. where Jerome Hawley was one of the commissioners and d. in 1639. I think the religious implications are apparent during the earlier Plundering period and Timothy B. Reardon of St. Mary's College has a wonderful book published on the subject through the Maryland Historical Society. I personally am trying very hard to identify the Catholic families that fled to Virginia during this period. However, during the later period I am sure the families were commuting back and forth across the river frequently for social purposes. George Washington is a prime example and he was friends with William Diggs who owned the area where Ft. Washington is now. Charles and P.G. Co., Families are found in George Washington's papers which are on line. In my family Nathaniel Halley who lived at Costly and Costly Addition in Charles Co., Md., became assistant Tobacco Inspector at Colchester Virginia around 1789 and later moved to Fairfax Co.Va. I would be most appreciative for any and all help on this Hawley/Halley family from either side of the River. I am most willing to share information. I hope to get to one of the Bryans Library Meetings soon!
